Garrett County Celtic Festival

Every year, my family looks forward to the Garrett County Celtic Festival! This one day event is truly fun for all ages. The festival celebrates the heritage, arts, and culture of the Appalachian immigrants from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Galicia/Asturias and Brittany. It is a great way to spend the first Saturday in June. Plus, Taylor-Made is a proud sponsor of the event!

Where is the Garrett County Celtic Festival?

The Garrett County Celtic Festival takes place in the Friendsville Community Park along the Youghiogheny River. If you are staying in the Deep Creek Lake area, it is a short fifteen minute drive. There is plenty of parking as well, and attendants can help you find a spot. This is a rain or shine event. There are pavilions and tented areas should you need to find cover.

Festival Events

There are so many fun things to see and do! You can browse the Celtic Village to shop for Irish imports, Celtic jewelry, traditional Highland-wear (think kilts!), pottery, baskets and more. There are numerous artisans, so many items are unique and handmade. This is also where you can find great food from a variety of vendors.

There are also performers and speakers who bring history to life. You can learn about Celtic influences in the local, Appalachian region or hear about the history of tartans and kilts. These take place throughout the day.

One of my favorite things to watch are the Highland Athletic Games. They have been a traditional part of Scottish culture for hundreds of years and are still popular today. These feats of strength and agility typically include the caber toss, hammer throw and more.

Beautiful music fills the day! There are five stages with performances by a wide variety of musicians. The 2019 line-up includes Shanty Irish, Aurora Celtic, pipe & drum bands and many other performers.

Bring the kids because there are tons of activities for them as well. Costume making, face painting and a kids parade are just a few ways to keep them entertained.

In Conclusion

The Garrett County Celtic Festival is just one more reason that this area is a great place to call home. As always, you can search my website to find your Garrett County home!
