Cardboard Box Derby Design Deep Creek Lake

Cardboard Box Derby Design-Deep Creek Lake. March 19, 2011. That means you only have 37 days to come up with a design, get the necessary cardboard, purchase a couple dozen rolls of duct tape, and try to put together a team of people who will be willing to sip a few beers and help build a cardboard rocket ship for this year’s cardboard box derby. Last year, Long and Foster manager Bob Carney, and myself (Bob Holcomb) from The Spiker Team put together our first entry in this event which was a two man Bob Sled, AKA “The Bobs’ Sled”.  Long and Foster agent Doug McClive had the cardboard connection from an anonymous source, and fellow agent Mark Utterback came through with cases of duct tape to get the build started.  What better way to get down a track of packed snow than on a Bobsled?  So, from there the construction journey began on some old saw horses with many different kinds of cardboard products.  It didn’t take too many 3- hour build sessions to get our design laid out and put together.

BLOG STOP! Seriously folks, it is not that hard to build a cardboard box entry.  The whole experience from putting it together until you cross the finish line is exciting and rewarding. BLOG RE-START!

Deep Creek Lake Card Board Box Derby

Did I mention this is to raise money for the blind skiers program???  I bet I can find more reasons for you to participate then you can invent excuses not too.  You have 37 days. Get together with your family, friends, coworkers, or make some new friends and put your best effort in building a cardboard box masterpiece and pilot the vessel to victory.  If you finish first or last, consider it a victory in life for supporting a great cause and having a heck of a lot of fun being a part of the process.

Willy Wisp,Wisp Resort Ski Lessons. I know we have a lot of young families that are choosing Deep Creek Lake as their second home get away. Young families need a special place they can count on to help instill confidence and love for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. The Willy Wisp program at Wisp Resort will provide your youngsters with professionally trained instructors teaching groups from 3-7 years old to 8-14 years old. Believe me, you will be amazed how quickly the young ones latch on and learn these sports. Even if your children are grown you should still drop by and become a spectator of some heartwarming moments.

Willy Wisp,Wisp Resort Ski Lessons

My mother-in-law, wife and I brought down our niece who is a hair past 2 years old for her first attempt at skiing. It didn’t take long at all before she was cruising down the slope by herself! What a wonderful experience to be involved in. Check out the rates so you can be prepared on your next visit to DCL to start your child on a lifelong love for winter sports.

Snow Tubing at Deep Creek Lake

No other Deep Creek Lake activity screams family fun like Snow Tubing at Wisp Resort.  Take a little time away from skiing or snowboarding and head down to Wisp Outdoors Adventure Park and get the family signed up for a fun afternoon of snow tubing.  This takes very little effort, other than bringing your enthusiasm with you, and a smile on your face.  Just grab a tube (the firmer, the faster) and head up the magic carpet to the top of the park.  Stop and look around at the top because you get an amazing view of McHenry Cove from that vantage point.  Don’t be intimidated in any way shape or form.  Plant your bottom in a tube and get  ready to slide and spin your way up and down the dump-dee-dumps to the bottom.  Try it on your belly on your next run if you want to mix up the excitement.  Don’t put it off another minute on your next visit to Deep Creek Lake.  Watch the kids’ smiles, on both young and adult, at the end of every run and see how they scurry with excitement to their next turn down the mountain.

Deep Creek Lake Wisp Resort Winter Sports. Okay folks; get your minds centered at the task at hand. Feel the cold winter, accept the cold winter, love the cold winter! After you get in the winter spirit, turn your focus toward Deep Creek Lake and Wisp Resort and get ready for the winter sports to begin. We have had steady flow of snowfall for the last week and conditions are improving at Wisp Resort. Wisp has had the snowmaking canons firing around the clock for the last couple of weeks to ensure that they have a solid base of snow to get the season started. As I look out my window from Long and Foster across the lake, my vision of the ski slopes is impaired because of the amount of snow we are getting at the moment. It is forecasted to keep coming down for the next few days, and then on and off for the next 10 days. Load up the car and the family, set your GPS for Wisp Resort and spend the next couple of weeks of the holiday season enjoying impressive powder. See you on the slopes.

Deep Creek Lake’s Chili Splash

5th Annual Deep Creek Chili Splash

Wisp Resort will be holding their infamous CHILI COOK-OFF this Saturday August 7th from Noon-5:30 pm. Come taste many different interpretations of this famous San Antonio dish dating back to 1731…yes, that’s right…Texas that is!  I have researched it and there is a misconception that chili is a Mexican dish. The history books will steer you to San Antonio, Texas where early Spanish settlers by order of King Phillips V arrived from the Spanish Canary Islands and made a spicy “Spanish” stew that later became what we now know as chili.

5th Annual Deep Creek Chili Splash

The key ingredient to this world re-known “stew” is hot peppers and in some cases, a lot of them! Some chili enthusiasts pride themselves in preparing a chili that is nuclear hot with the hot pepper being the star. Other cooks like to layer the smokey flavors of cumin, chili powder, onion, beef, and kidney beans, with a hint of spice from the hot pepper. I believe the key to a great chili is a delicious flavor base, and for me that is a bottle of Newcastle beer.  I also like to combine ground beef, ground pork, and ground turkey with the other “regular” ingredients.  If you think you can take the heat, then bring your brave taste pallet over to the hot pepper eating contest.  Size up your hot pepper eating skills against other fire bellies.

General admission is $5 for adults, $3 Children (7-12yrs), 6 and under is free, which includes entrance to the event, Music, Children’s events and 5 tasting kits.

Cooks may contact John McCracken at 301.387.4911  ext. 2211

Deep Creek Lake Lodestone Golf Caddy

Last year around this time I had a great opportunity to caddie for Hale Irwin when he christened the front nine at Lodestone Golf Club.  I felt that I nailed it, but after the round Hale half jokingly told me I was the worst caddie he ever had in his career….Ouch!

Deep Creek Lake-Hale Irwin-Lodestone Golf Caddy

Although I have spent 24 years building golf courses, I never really had time to grasp exactly what a caddie does other than carry the bag. It was news to me that each club actually had a specific place in the bag. Go figure. My take on it was the same as when I play and I just stuff the club wherever it fits.  It was news to me that I was supposed to bring a wet and dry towel to keep the clubs and golf ball clean. I had to grasp the critical caddy duties that keep the golfer focused on his game. Thankfully for me, this was a practice round and I wasn’t responsible for taking any food off the Irwin family’s table!

This year I made sure I was on my “A” game so that if I was called to duty in the caddying department I wouldn’t be smacked around for my lack of skills! I got back in the gym, got into strong physical shape and studied PGA game films of caddies who worked for the best golfers in the world. Now I felt I was ready to assume the role as super caddy!

This year it was my responsibility to caddy for Steve Irwin, who is Hale’s son. I had a wet towel ready to wipe down clubs and golf balls, and returned clubs to their proper place with scientific precision. Steve actually used a few suggestions about putting lines and shot trajectories into greens. I think Hale even had a chuckle or two about my born-again effort to be a decent golf caddy.

I have hung up my golf course construction boots for good and have happily put on the real estate cap here in Deep Creek Lake, but there will always be this feeling deep down in my heart wondering if my calling all along was to be the best caddie ever on the PGA tour!
