Deep Creek Lake Fishing Guide

Deep Creek Lake fishing is a popular spring activity. As the snow melts and the weather warms up, this is a great way to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Because it requires no experience, anyone can have fun casting a line surrounded by spectacular scenery.

Deep Creek Lake Fishing

Deep Creek Lake Fishing License

Anyone over the age of 16 must have a valid Maryland license. You can purchase one online through the Department of Natural Resources. Local sports shops also sell them. If you are only in the area for a short time, you can buy a three or seven day license. The DNR also offers “free” fishing days when no freshwater fishing license is required. They are the first two Saturdays in June and July 4.

Places to Go Fish

Broadford Lake – This 140 acre lake is located in Oakland. Fish species: Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass and panfish. Because fishing from the shoreline is easy, this is a good spot to take the kids.

Deep Creek Lake – Offers 67 miles of shoreline and over 3900 acres. Fish species: bass, trout, Walleye and panfish. If you don’t have a boat, you can fish from your dock or at Deep Creek Lake State Park.

-Some of the best fishing is April through June is when most fish are in 1 – 2 feet of water to spawn.

-You will have the best luck early in the morning or evening.

-Fish around stumps, large rocks and grass beds.

Fall Fishing Deep Creek Lake. As we shift into fall we see the lake transform into a wonderful and peaceful place where boat traffic is minimal and the weather is gorgeous. It is the time of the year that the leaves put on their yearly show and the fishing bite starts to heat up.

I was lucky enough to have my son pay us a visit for a week and we decided to maximize our time on the lake wetting a line. It has been many years since the last time we fished and we were optimistic that we would be successful in our venture. We started at Deep Creek Outfitters getting a few dozen minnows and nightcrawlers. The word on the street was that that fishing was sporadic but starting to kick in.  Our plan was to wake up the following morning and to hit a spot that was recommended by a friend so we dropped our minnows into the water at the boat dock and set home to get a good night’s rest.

The alarm clock came early and was welcomed with excitement and optimism. The winds were down and the lake looked like a massive mirror reflecting the early hues of Fall. All of our minnows survived the night and the boat started without a hitch. The ride out was almost spiritual as our pontoon boat parted the beautiful lake glass. The temps were chilly but were forecasted to peak later in the day near the mid 70’s.  Our “secret spot” was empty and we slowly motored down a couple hundred yards before our destination which was a grass bed near the shoreline that dropped off to around 8-12 feet of depth.  We quietly set anchor and baited our minnows on our hooks and cast outside of the grass beds. We kicked back sipping coffee and enjoyed good conversation catching up on life. The lake was empty of traffic and the sound of acorns rained periodically around us.  My son Peyton worked the edge of the grass beds and landed a nice Walleye to start the day which was very exciting. It was a hair shy of being of legal size to eat so we threw it back. I concentrated on working the drop off outside the grass bed and was rewarded with a couple smallmouths to start my day. It was a soothing roller coaster ride of stimulating ups and downs throughout the morning and we went through a few lake species deciding not to keep any.

The Deep Creek Lake Fall fishing experience itself was the star of the show and we promised that next trip we would concentrate on a fish fry. We caught walleye, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and a few pickerel to complete a successful fishing adventure. As we head in to call it a day there was a majestic red tail hawk that flew by us that was breathtaking.

On your next visit bring the family or a close friend and get out on the lake with a fishing pole and enjoy some quality down time on the lake. Downshift your busy mind and breathe deeply taking advantage of what a handful of visitors experience ever year. Wonderful Fall fishing.

Fall Fishing Deep Creek Lake Maryland

Fall Fishing Deep Creek Lake Maryland. This year, fall fishing puts you in the pleasant “football weather” category in the 1st week of November here at the lake. The breeze gets a bit stiffer, the wind has a mild chill to it and the fishing bite lights up in its fall spender. The temperature has been a bit warmer than the past few years and you see a lot of boats late in the season trying to score a stringer full of delicious fish.

Check out http://www.fishdeepcreek.com/ for real time fishing reports, techniques and a message board that will keep you in the hunt for fresh fish.

Here is the latest report from the message board of 11/5/16-

Fished from 7 – 3 mainly on the north end with good results. Water temp was 51 at 7am and climbed to 56 at 2:30. Water was stained for the most part but the clearer water held the better fish.

Mainly SM were caught (11″ up to 15″) in the am on top water and the the afternoon was plastics fished very slow when fish were found.

1 Nice LM was caught under a dock on plastic. Caught 9 fish total and not a bad day on DCL. All fish were caught in 10-20 FOW.

Come join us over the next couple of weeks and wet a line before the lake starts its traditional freeze. Next fishing season is the popular ice fishing season which can be mega-productive!

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Summer Activities-McHenry, Maryland History. This weekend is a little slow on events but never comes up shy on the vast amount of summer activities. The tubers and fishermen have been steady on the lake as the weather remains perfect here at the lake. I noticed local ski and wakeboard instructor Greg Rouse on the water barefoot skiing at 6am a few days back, which is the most exciting/interesting thing I have seen on the lake.

 Weekly update Deep Creek Lake

Deep Creek Marina has recently acquired the popular Lakeside Club from DC Development and has re-directed the course from how it operates. There is a full-term commitment to their clients and the new ‘Deep Creek Marina Club’ is sharing this wonderful amenity with them on several different levels. Here are more details.

Deep Creek Marina is proud to announce the opening of the Deep Creek Marina Club.  We have never been so excited to give something back to our customers as this private club. We believe we have come up with the ultimate customer loyalty program that exceeds any points programs and other typical customer loyalty programs by tenfold and we are pretty certain you’ll agree.

DEEP CREEK MARINA CLUB

Would you like to have another boating destination on Deep creek Lake? One that you can call your own? Well, now you have it.  Members get their own private club to hang out and socialize or just kick back and relax. The Deep Creek Marina Club was conceptualized as a way to capture the boating lifestyle for our customers and offer an additional boating destination (plenty of parking by auto as well).  The Club currently offers incredible gourmet sandwiches and Pizzettes.  You can pick from our boat brand sandwich menu or build your own just the way you want it. We also offer weekend and daily food and drink specials. Beer, Wine, and top shelf liquor are offered exclusively for our members and their guests.   Best of all membership is free to our boat owners (certain restrictions apply).

Other benefits of membership include complimentary use of paddleboards, pedalboats, and kayaks, use of the lakefront tables and Adirondack chairs that make for a pleasant afternoon, or evening outing.  Kids or kids at heart can relax with our indoor pool table and game room and there is even a spot for little kids right where mom and dad can keep an eye on them and still enjoy the club offerings.  Hours for June are Thursday- Monday 11

Betsy captured this photo last week of a fox in the middle of the day which is very rare. It’s kind of neat photo because you’ll notice a reflection in the glass of the front door which gives the illusion of two foxes.

Weekly update Deep Creek Lake

Here is the flood of new lakefront listings that have come on the market over the last 30 days – http://mrislistings.mris.com/DE.asp?ID=52730674197.

And for a little trivia…DID YOU KNOW…?

Dr. James McHenry, Secretary of War during the administrations

of Presidents Washington and Adams, purchased

almost 1,000 acres in the Buffalo Marsh area

which is today known as Marsh Run Cove or McHenry

Cove. After James and his son William died, a nephew,

John McHenry, moved to the Buffalo Marsh property.

After the death of John and his wife, the land passed

through many hands but today we know the area as

McHenry.

Greeting from Deep Creek Lake-Rollar Coaster-Spring Fishing

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake

Greeting from Deep Creek Lake-Rollar Coaster-Spring Fishing. The country is reeling in confusion from the crazy spikes in heat and plunging temps over the last month of spring.  It was close to 80 last week and we had snow flurries on Saturday. The daffodils have already peaked, getting us pumped for a warm-up here at the lake.  It looks like we will be in the mid 50’s next week with a warm up to the lower 60’s next weekend!

I am such a big fan of certain restaurants here at the lake. Brenda’s Pizzeria is one that I have a warm place in my heart for. This pizzeria cooks up authentic New York pizza pies with deep roots from the neighborhood in and surrounding the Bronx. I just stumbled onto a new product (via their Facebook) they are offering that may be an option during a visit here when you get in a pinch. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into one of these delicious to-go pizzas!

Quote from their page…“Have you ever got all the way home after a great vacation at Deep Creek Lake and thought, “Man, I wish I had a Brenda’s Pizza right now!” Well, you can! Grab a Take & Bake before you leave! Having Brenda’s at home is easy as pie! You can choose from any of our 16″ specialty pizzas or build your own! Yummmmm!!!

The temperatures may fluctuate a bit but the fishing bite is on at the moment. Quote of the week- “People tend to think that happiness is a stroke of luck, something that will descend like fine weather if you’re fortunate. But happiness is the result of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly.”  — Elizabeth Gilbert
