The Spring Thaw at Swallow Falls State Park

The Spring Thaw at Swallow Falls State Park

The Spring Thaw at Swallow Falls State Park
The Spring Thaw at Swallow Falls State Park

I never get tired of promoting this special park here in Garrett County. The spring thaw at Swallow falls State Park can be epic if you catch it after a cold winter season. Imagine the amount of precipitation that we get here at Deep Creek Lake that remains suspended as snow. Some years, we have periodic warm-ups that etch away at the snow mass throughout the season.  Some years, we have periodic warm-ups that etch away at the snow mass throughout the season. Some years, it stays cold for the entire winter which basically keeps the amount of precipitation on the ground increasing after each snowfall event. When the springtime blooms here with warm weather, we can see the rivers and creeks expand enormously when this buildup of snow starts to melt. When this massive amount of water starts pouring over our waterfalls in the area it can make you feel tiny with its thunderous power. Gravity becomes an astounding catalyst of force as the entire county releases flood gates of melting snow through vein after vein of branch creeks and streams until they explode into our river systems. The constant roar of the water echoes throughout the park and surrounding areas drowning out the subtle sounds of nature that you normally hear in the summer. Be warned that this power can be very dangerous and you should be advised to keep away from the water’s edge. One slip into the raging waters would certainly prove fatal. Thankfully, Swallow Falls State Park is laid out with very high and safe vantage points to enjoy the show safely. Dress in rain type gear because the park will be misty. Some days you can be transported back in time and wonder how it must have felt to live back when the things of the world weren’t so well defined. There had to have been an awesome range of emotions living in such a mystical rugged area of the country back in those days. I feel lucky to call this area my home. Put this on your list of things to share with your family and friends. You will not be disappointed. Continue reading The Spring Thaw at Swallow Falls State Park

Lot Sales and Home Construction Deep Creek Lake

Having had spent a lifetime building golf courses around the world I have seen a few ups and down in the economy. Golf courses generally were the center of big housing developments with the intentions of selling lots and building homes. Of course there were many more amazing things these developments had to offer. For the intent of this Deep Creek Lake property update, I will keep the fluff out of the conversation! Deep Creek Dunk by Snowmobile 2016

So I wake up on Dunk morning and notice the water pouring off the icicles on the back window. Normally the temps are brutal cold on the morning of the Deep Creek Dunk and last year we had a storm on top of it that made it hard for people to even get to the event. My wife Betsy and I tentatively planned on going to the Deep Creek Dunk by snowmobiles 2016 but grew increasingly concerned at the warm morning we were experiencing. Betsy Holcomb Team Taylor Made Vacations and Real Estate

Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales is proud and excited to announce the addition to their Real Estate Company; now co-owner Betsy Spiker Holcomb. Betsy, who was born and raised in Garrett County, brings a vast knowledge of Deep Creek Lake & the surrounding areas and an extensive background of Real Estate experience with her. Additionally, Betsy brings her Real Estate Team consisting of Bob Holcomb, Karen Myers, and Karen Doerr along with her. Real Estate Agent, Broker, and co-owner of Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales, Jay Ferguson stated, “I am thrilled to add Betsy & her team to our Taylor-Made family. It’s incredibly rare to add an agent with such an established brand and with such vast experience, let alone their production in our market. Perhaps the most impressive to me is their hands-on involvement in our community and their commitment to excellence.” Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations hit a milestone in 2014 with the expansion of a new Real Estate Division to the company. Acknowledging that a large portion of vacation rental homes were on the real estate market, it seemed only sensible to create a “one stop shop” for both buyers and sellers to handle all of their real estate and property management needs. Today, the Taylor-Made Real Estate Team continues to thrive and the addition of Betsy, Bob, Karen, Karen is a positive attribute for both home buyers and sellers. Jay went on to say, “With their accrued experience of Garrett County and wisdom in all facets of traditional real estate transitions, we already consider them valuable members of Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations,”

Christmas 2015-Paddleboarding-Deep Creek Lake

I am reflecting on an experience over the holiday season that I thought I would share with you.

So it’s Christmas Day 2015 and I decided to go Paddleboarding on Deep Creek Lake.  The mild weather had mostly everyone happy except for the winter sports enthusiasts. As the sunrise warms the mountain skyline, I notice the suns reflection cast over a glassy mirror lake that seems incredibly inviting. The warm week prior to Christmas morning shows no sign of letting up and the calm lake always triggers my mind towards the spiritual solace of a morning paddleboard session. I have an instant conflict in my mind because after all, its wintertime! The air temps seem reasonable however I wonder how cold the lake has become with the fluctuating fall weather.  I finish my coffee and decide to test the waters… I certainly have to be the first one ever in the history of Deep Creek lake to ever paddleboard on Christmas Day and I’d be a liar if I didn’t mention that this fuels my excitement!

I get down to the lake and I’m happy to see that the wind is still non-existent. I have tried to explain to people the spiritual feeling you get as you slowly slice through virgin lake glass. Ahead of you is a perfect reflection of the mountains and trees reflecting off the water and behind you are fan layers of a trace wake calmly sent toward the shoreline. The only sound you hear early in the morning is your paddle dipping slowly through the water along with an occasional fish snapping the top of the water and birds far off in the distant. Christmas morning did not disappoint! I did a couple mile spin up and around some beautiful shorelines and didn’t see a soul on the lake throughout my journey.

As we roll into Martin Luther King Weekend the cold weather and snow are filling in and we forget quickly about the warm fall and winter season that is behind us.  Take every opportunity that you have to enjoy the lake and surrounding areas which have so much to offer. In any conditions there is a diamond in the rough experience to be had here at Deep Creek Lake.
