Deep Creek Lake Centennial: A Celebration of Heritage and Community
In 2025, we mark the Deep Creek Lake centennial extraordinary milestone—100 years since its creation in 1925, when the Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Company transformed Deep Creek into the reservoir we know today.
From its modest beginnings as a hydroelectric project, the lake has flourished into a beloved four-season destination. Now, the DCL100 Centennial Committee, representing over ten organizations including the POA, Maryland State Parks, Garrett County Government, and local sponsors, is honoring this legacy with a series of engaging events and lasting community projects.
Reflecting on a Century of Deep Creek Lake
Construction on the dam began in 1923, and the turbines began spinning in May 1925, officially filling the lake that would redefine Western Maryland's landscape. Over the decades, Deep Creek Lake has grown into a destination for boating, fishing, hiking, and winter recreation, attracting generations of residents and visitors.
DCL100: Mission and Community Projects
The mission of the DCL100 Committee is two‑fold: celebrate the lake’s past 100 years while ensuring its preservation and vitality for the next century. Initiatives include:
-
Interactive Centennial Kiosk Project: Nineteen educational kiosks are being installed at scenic and historic sites around the lake. Each one explores themes like boating evolution, first cabins, environmental stewardship, and fly‑fishing culture. Visitors can engage via a digital passport app, unlocking rewards as they explore.
-
Digital Archive: In partnership with Garrett College and local groups, vintage Deep Creek Lake visitor guides dating back to the 1950s have been digitized and made available for research and public enjoyment.
-
Limited-Edition Centennial Coin & Collectibles: Unique memorabilia, including coins, posters, and books, are being created as keepsakes of this milestone year.
Highlights & Events Through the Year
The celebration is designed to bring the community together in fun and meaningful ways:
