Garrett 250 Birthday Bash at the Garrett County Fairgrounds

Garrett County will take part in a historic national milestone this summer with a major community celebration. On July 18, 2026, residents and visitors are invited to the Garrett County Fairgrounds for the Garrett 250 Birthday Bash, an all-day event marking America’s 250th anniversary while highlighting the history and character of Garrett County itself.

The celebration will run from 12PM to 10PM and will feature live music, historical programs, family activities, and a nighttime drone show. The event is part of Garrett 250, a countywide initiative created to recognize the nation’s semiquincentennial and explore how the local communities of Garrett County connect to the larger American story.

Honoring America’s 250th Through Garrett County’s Story

The Garrett 250 initiative, commissioned by Garrett County Government, focuses on how national history can be understood through local experiences. Rather than highlighting only well-known national events, the project explores the role that Garrett County’s towns, people, and traditions have played in shaping life in the region.

Communities such as Accident, Friendsville, Grantsville, Kitzmiller, Loch Lynn Heights, Mountain Lake Park, and Oakland each represent different chapters in the county’s history. From early settlements and transportation routes to industry, tourism, and community leadership, these places have contributed to the development of Garrett County over generations.

According to Sarah Myers, Chair of the Garrett 250 Committee and Communications Coordinator for Garrett County Government, the goal is to tell the broader American story through the lens of local communities.

“Each town represents a unique piece of Garrett County’s history,” Myers said. “When you look at them together, you begin to see how the story of this county connects to the story of the nation.”

A Full Day of Entertainment, History, and Community

The Garrett 250 Birthday Bash is designed to be a welcoming event for all ages, offering a mix of entertainment, education, and community engagement.

Throughout the day, guests can enjoy live music performances from Queen City Funk & Soul, The Remedy, and the Garrett Community Concert Band. Historical presenters, reenactors, and storytellers will share insights about the region’s past, while exhibits and demonstrations will allow visitors to explore Garrett County’s heritage in an interactive way.

Families will also find plenty to do during the event. A kids’ activity area will offer family-friendly entertainment, while local nonprofits, community organizations, and vendors will provide information about the groups and initiatives that continue to shape the county today.

Additional activities include a car show, veteran recognition programs, and historical displays that highlight important moments and contributions from across the region.

Drone Light Show to Close the Celebration

The evening will conclude with a memorable visual finale. At 9:30 p.m., a drone light show will take place above the fairgrounds, creating patriotic images in the night sky as a tribute to both the country’s past and the community’s future.

Event organizers expect more than 8,000 people to attend the celebration, making it one of the largest coordinated gatherings in Garrett County’s history.

Admission to the Garrett 250 Birthday Bash will be by donation, allowing everyone in the community the opportunity to take part in the celebration.

Preserving Local History for Future Generations

Although the July celebration will be the centerpiece of the project, Garrett 250 is part of a larger, year-long effort to document the county’s history as part of the national America 250 commemoration.

Through collaboration with the Maryland Two Fifty Commission’s “Once in a Generation” program, Garrett County will work with historians, videographers, and local municipalities to preserve stories from across the region. These efforts will include collecting photographs, video footage, and oral histories that highlight the people and communities who shaped Garrett County.

The project will also support educational exhibits, storytelling programs, and public engagement initiatives designed to help residents better understand their local heritage.

One of these efforts is the Citizen Card program, an interactive initiative that encourages participants to learn about local government, civic organizations, and the role citizens play in shaping their communities.

A Milestone Moment for Garrett County

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, Garrett 250 offers a meaningful way for residents to celebrate both national history and the communities that make Garrett County unique.

The Garrett 250 Birthday Bash on July 18, 2026 will bring people together for a day of music, learning, and celebration, honoring the past while looking ahead to the next chapter in Garrett County’s story.
