Independence Day-*Accident Parade*- *Fire on the Mountain*

Independence Day-Accident Parade-Fire on the Mountain. We are closing in on 240 years ago that we gained our independence from Great Britain with Thomas Jefferson penning the Declaration of Independence.  John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:

“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.

Here at Deep Creek Lake (LIKE our page!) we follow suit celebrating in very traditional ways that John Adams may have been referring to. Most folks who show up here bring friends and family to take a little time away from work to celebrate our great country. The burgers and dogs will be charring on the grill with potato salad, pork and beans, and all the other fixins’ that will be ready to consume! Families generally break down into different groups to enjoy some lake time. The water-skiers and wakeboarders generally get there fill in the early morning hours or near dusk when lake traffic has subsided. The tubing crowd welcomes the busier boat crowd so they can try to launch their friends off the rough and tumble tubes. The paddleboard/kayak and canoe crowd normally fit in wherever they can find a calm cove.

Locals traditionally enjoy the Fireman’s Parade in the sleepy small town of Accident. It is there you find small town living at its best. This fireman’s parade is scheduled for an 11am start through the main street on Accident. Chicken dinners, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, ice cream cones, drinks and homemade pies will be served at the Accident Fire hall starting at noon. The historical Drane House will be open from noon until 5pm. Come take a few minutes away from your vacation and bring the kids down to join in on our local tradition. How can you go wrong with an event that has a parade, arts and crafts, food, mechanical bull, hay rides, bounce house, games and historical tours? Hope to see you there!

The star of the holiday weekend hands down is the Fire on the Mountain fireworks display at Wisp Resort. The show is “fired” from the tubing park at Wisp and can be seem from many vantage points throughout the county. The most popular is to go by boat to McHenry Cove and watch from the water. You will see hundreds of boats jockeying to find the best place to watch the show. Garrett Highway Rte. 219 also has hundreds of folks lined up to watch the show from lawn chairs perched perfectly across the lake. No matter where you find a place to enjoy the fireworks show, please be safe and respectful of everyone and have a super vacation with us here at the lake!

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-News-Sailing-Events. There are many reasons to love the lake!  One of my favorite past times is watching the sunrise.  And thankfully, our 2 ½ year old son makes that possible at 6:00 each morningJ.  He enjoys it just as much as we do and chatters away with excitement as we watch the sun come up over the mountains and listen to the birds chirp each morning.

Deep Creek has been in the media quite a bit recently.  My hometown was rated one of TripAdvisor’s 30 Rising Vacation Rental Destinations in 2015.  And we were also featured in a Washington Post article “Where to Shop for that Home Away From Home”, where I was interviewed in regard to current buyer trends.

If you’ve ever considered learning to sail, start right here on peaceful Deep Creek Lake.  My husband Bob took the week-long course two summers ago and caught the bug.  His description of his experience is summed up here.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to join so I’m not able to crew but I’m not sure that’s a good idea for a married couple anyway!  Bob had nothing but good things to say about the DCL Sailing School.  Classes book up fast; do not wait to reserve your spot.

Real estate showings are heating up and offers have been coming in on some properties early in the summer season, which is a healthy sign of stability for our market.  Our featured listings this month range from Lakefront, Lake Access and Lake Area Homes & Home Sites – some of which are new to the market and some which have had $10,000-$50,000 price adjustments.  And a few are established rentals generating $60K in annual income.  There’s something for everyone at the lake!  This is a link to our featured listings where you can view photos and visual tours (attachment shows a printable version of the same): http://mrislistings.mris.com/DE.asp?ID=63571918628.

There are quite a few activities coming up in the next week’s – Fire on the Mountain, Taste of Garrett, Boat Parade and Maryland Symphony to name a few.  And our local Chamber of Commerce site has an event calendar as well.

Fire on the Mountain 2012

If you are like me you have a Charlie Daniels song floating around in your head after hearing these words. “Fire on the mountain, lightning in the air” goes the old country rock classic song. Well this year we got a little bit of fire and lightning. The event normally commenced at 9:00pm’ish but was delayed a bit this year because of a huge hail/lightning/rain event that backed up the starting time 45 minutes or so.

In case there are a few of you out there that have no clue what I am talking about; Fire on the Mountain is a Fourth of July fireworks event that lights the sky above Wisp Ski Resort every year here at Deep Creek Lake. People line Highway 219 for an optimum vantage point.  Or they come by boat to sneak in close to the resort, sit atop Wisp ski slope to catch an eye level view of the fire show, or go to Deep Creek Marina to witness the show while enjoying the new line of boats available for the summer season. Make sure you put this exhilarating event on the calendar with the kiddies next year if you didn’t make it to this year’s event.

Greetings!  Deep Creek Lake was not spared the Friday night storm.  We were personally lucky to have avoided a power outage but some others were not so fortunate.  The radio said there were roughly 4,000+ people without power after the storm.  There are still a few isolated areas without power.  We did, however, fare much better than areas to our East.  Many of our clients and friends made an unscheduled visit to their vacation homes at Deep Creek Lake because they were without power in the DC and northern VA areas.

The DockDogs event that was held at Wisp this weekend was quite a site to see!  I was out of town but my wife Betsy was fascinated by how far some of these dogs can jump, from Chihuahua’s to German Shepherd’s.  It’s definitely an event that will go on my 2013 calendar.  P.S. The dog is hard to spot in this photo; he’s flying through the air just to the left of the red ball!

Now, on to the beautiful weather and fun 4th of July week ahead of us.  The fireworks display will take place at dusk on Wednesday evening from the tubing park at Wisp Resort.  You can watch from your car along Garrett Highway, by boat in McHenry Cove or from the Independence Day Concert taking place under the tent at Garrett College (beginning at 7:30pm).  This week, July 5-7, at Garrett College under the tent is “Chautauqua”.  “Exploring the War of 1812 in Maryland” is the theme.  The complete schedule is on the link below.  http://www.artsandentertainment.org/pages/chautauqua.html

Looking ahead…The 91st Annual Western Maryland Tennis Championships are scheduled on the clay courts in Mountain Lake Park August 2-5th.  Whether you are a tennis player or enjoy being a spectator, you can catch some great tennis!  http://www.mlptc.org/

The Spiker Team’s featured listing of the week is a beautiful home within 5 minutes of Deep Creek Lake on 5 acres with its own pond, stream and barn.  Convenient country living!  http://vt.realbiz360.com/MLS-1041549.html

For up-to-date listings you can search our new website any time of day at www.DeepCreekLakeProperty.com.  And, if you have any comments regarding the new design, layout & functionality we’d love to hear from you.  Have a great week!
