Wisp Resort Closes 2/25/17

Wisp Resort Closes 2/25/17. After another wonderful season of winter sports at Wisp Resort and in lieu of the recent warm up we have experienced over the last week or so, the ski slopes are now closed for the season. The fickle season has produced plenty of epic conditions but was starting to show signs of spring periodically through-out. My guess is that with kids’ sports/activities starting for our out-of-town friends and the conditions here stalling a hair, it’s not economically feasible to keep the slopes open. That being said, I can tell you that the winter season is not over yet so make plans to keep visiting this wonderful area and experience every ounce of every season. Thanks to all the staff at Wisp Resort for making the 2016/2017 season a memorable one!  Their Adventure Park will remain open on the weekends with ziplining, mountain coaster and lots more fun.  We hope to see you all soon!

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Upcoming Events-Year End Sales

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Upcoming Events-Year End Sales. We have seen some great crowds from the holiday weekend and the fresh snow we received each day made for nice morning powder.  If you are traveling here tomorrow please take caution; we are under a winter storm warning beginning tomorrow at 4:00AM through Tuesday at 10:00PM.  Expected accumulation is 6 to 8 inches.  Thankfully, we have excellent road crews that make it possible for us to get out and about during times like these.

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Happy 2014!-Wisp News

Weekly updates by Betsy Spiker Holcomb of Taylor-Made Vacations and Sales, Deep Creek Lake. We hope you are well rejuvenated from a long, holiday break!  The slope conditions were great over the last few weeks and those who spent their time off here took advantage.  Some big news from our household – Griffin will become a big brother in mid-June and he started walking between Christmas & New Year’s.  The timing couldn’t have been better.  His first major steps were taken at my in-laws home while the whole family cheered with excitement.  To see him walk across the living room was magnificent!

The arctic temperatures are here and will continue to decline sending us into a deep freeze over the next 24-48 hours.  The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Warning for Garrett County and schools have already been canceled for tomorrow.  From the NWS web alert – as low as 50 below due to temperatures around 20 below tonight, and winds west 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.  Impacts: frost bite and hypothermia are a certainty if precautions are not taken.  Icy surfaces will lead to poor driving conditions.  Additional information can be found on their site and here is another good website locals use for weather http://www.garrettcollege.edu/weather/ (scroll down and click on Forecast, Garrett County, MD).

Some other important things to remember during winter advisories are your pipes and the possibility of power outages.  If your home has been winterized and the pipes have been drained then I would think you have not much to worry about, but if your home has not been winterized and you are struck with a power outage it may not be a bad idea to have things checked out.  To check for outages visit http://outages.firstenergycorp.com/mdwv_.html.  We are all keeping our fingers crossed that no one loses power!  On a brighter note, the high on Wednesday is 21°, Thursday is 33° and Friday is 42°.  Just in time for the weekend!

News from Wisp Resort…  The First Tracks Program has begun with chairlift 2 or 3 opening at 8AM on Saturday’s for season pass holders and multi-day ticket holders.  This is a great way to get all the fresh powder and corduroy before everyone else!  Also, Stage Wisp Concert Series begins this Wednesday and continues every Wednesday to February 26th.  These are free concerts held in Wispers Bar from 6:30-9:00 with performers like the ever-popular Davisson Brothers Band, Shawn Owen and The Terah Crawford Band.

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Deep Creek Dunk-January MLS Stats. Fluffy powder lined the deck of our home this morning with steady snow dumping throughout the night and into the morning tapering off around noon. Wisp Resort had perfect conditions today as the snow making guns were turned off and shin-high powder was on with light crowds. 14 trails are open along with the tubing park and snow making operations are marching ahead to ensure that the mountain will be completely open by the Christmas Holidays. I hope you have your lodging booked in anticipation of enjoying some fresh powder or perfectly groomed corduroy for the 2013/2014 winter sports season.  It’s time to get here and release all that pent-up adrenaline!

Wisp Resort Closed For The Season 3/18/12

Wisp Resort Closed For The Season 3/18/12. Wisp Resort Closed For The Season 3/18/12 as the springtime temperatures have finally decided to consistently stay warm enough to make snowmaking impossible. It has been a very successful winter for Wisp even though Mother Nature made them work harder than normal to keep snow on the ground. Thankfully the temps dipped periodically throughout the season, and when they did, Wisp was ready on every occasion to maximize their snow making efforts to keep excellent ski conditions throughout a very mild winter season. I talked to a lot of folks who weren’t complaining about skiing groomed corduroy trails with temps in the 50’s-60’s. Thanks Wisp Resort for a great winter season!

Snow Making Wisp Resort

Snow Making Wisp Resort. It is Friday, November 18, 2011 here at Deep Creek Lake, one week before Thanksgiving.  Wisp Resort has fired up their state-of-the-art snow making system in preparation for the upcoming winter sports season. Temperatures are perfect for snow making at the moment, with humidity down to 50%, crucial for getting that coveted light champagne powder. Wisp Resort is always on the pulse of preparation year-after-year, enabling them to deliver some of the finest snow conditions on the East Coast.

Snow Making Wisp Resort
Snow Making Wisp Resort

The temperatures will fluctuate a bit warmer during the week, but that doesn’t mean that this is some vain fire drill and time wasted.  After all, snow making is a very complex system that has miles and miles of pipe, valves, snow guns, and nozzles that have to be turned on and pressurized to assure that all the bugs are out of the system before the season starts. Wisp Resort is meticulous regarding every aspect & detail, to guarantee a problem-free experience for everyone that visits the mountain. We have closed the chapter on the summer season and the presence of active snow making machines is a signal to locals (like the leaves changing in the fall) that the snow season is about to begin.
