Renovation project began in the fall of 2015 and will continue through spring of 2018.

As part of a three-year $3.7 million-dollar renovation, wisp Resort recently announced a rebranding of the Wisp Resort Hotel which will be known as The Lodge at Wisp. The renovation project on the hotel began in the fall of 2015 and will continue through spring of 2018.

The Lodge at Wisp will welcome guests with significant changes and improvements to both the interior and exterior of the property. The upgrade will offer more contemporary accommodations, new outdoor Gathering spaces, and overall more modern and functional designs.

Work on the 169-room slope side hotel has totaled more than 1.5 million so far. A new entrance features a porte cochere with an outdoor gas fireplace and timber frame structure with stacked stone facade and lighting. The landscaping is highlighted by a waterfall, benches and day pergola walkway.

Interior renovations include an updated front desk and check-in area to compliment the new entrance. The 100-rooms on all six floors in the tower section of the hotel have been renovated, and 16 new king Suites have been introduced into the guest room mix. The remaining 69 rooms on three floors in the lodge section of the hotel will be renovated by Spring 2018.

Additional upgrades are being made to conference rooms, a new fitness center, exterior signage, courtyards with fire pits and enhanced landscape features. Construction on the current project will be completed in time for the ski season. Work will continue in the spring on a courtyard on east side of the hotel plus renovations to the lobby and the new front porch.

For more information about the upgrades call Wisp Resort, call 301-387-4000 or visit www.wispresort.com.

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Deep Creek Dunk-January MLS Stats. Fluffy powder lined the deck of our home this morning with steady snow dumping throughout the night and into the morning tapering off around noon. Wisp Resort had perfect conditions today as the snow making guns were turned off and shin-high powder was on with light crowds. 14 trails are open along with the tubing park and snow making operations are marching ahead to ensure that the mountain will be completely open by the Christmas Holidays. I hope you have your lodging booked in anticipation of enjoying some fresh powder or perfectly groomed corduroy for the 2013/2014 winter sports season.  It’s time to get here and release all that pent-up adrenaline!

July 4th On the Mountain is a few days away!!! I always get the Marshall Tucker song “Fire On the Mountain” in my head during the week of July 4th. I can tell you that the excitement and anticipation comes to a peak for Garrett County for this famous event here at the lake. Find a vantage point from the lake on a boat, on the ski slopes, on highway 219, or any place with a view of the Adventure Park at Wisp. The start time for the event is at dusk on July 4th with a rain date of July 5th.

EPT Ski Properties, under the management of Everbright Pacific LLC, now owns the operational lands and facilities of Wisp Resort, including the Hale Irwin-designed Lodestone Golf Course. The Greenbrier section of the Lodestone subdivision and hundreds of additional acres around the Lodestone golf course were purchased by NLP of MD (National Land Partners). Later this spring, additional lands will be offered in a sale process with acreage tracts ranging from 48 acres – 257 acres as well as an array of “ready to build” homesites. Cardboard Box Derby Design Deep Creek Lake

Cardboard Box Derby Design-Deep Creek Lake. March 19, 2011. That means you only have 37 days to come up with a design, get the necessary cardboard, purchase a couple dozen rolls of duct tape, and try to put together a team of people who will be willing to sip a few beers and help build a cardboard rocket ship for this year’s cardboard box derby. Last year, Long and Foster manager Bob Carney, and myself (Bob Holcomb) from The Spiker Team put together our first entry in this event which was a two man Bob Sled, AKA “The Bobs’ Sled”.  Long and Foster agent Doug McClive had the cardboard connection from an anonymous source, and fellow agent Mark Utterback came through with cases of duct tape to get the build started.  What better way to get down a track of packed snow than on a Bobsled?  So, from there the construction journey began on some old saw horses with many different kinds of cardboard products.  It didn’t take too many 3- hour build sessions to get our design laid out and put together.

BLOG STOP! Seriously folks, it is not that hard to build a cardboard box entry.  The whole experience from putting it together until you cross the finish line is exciting and rewarding. BLOG RE-START!

Deep Creek Lake Card Board Box Derby

Did I mention this is to raise money for the blind skiers program???  I bet I can find more reasons for you to participate then you can invent excuses not too.  You have 37 days. Get together with your family, friends, coworkers, or make some new friends and put your best effort in building a cardboard box masterpiece and pilot the vessel to victory.  If you finish first or last, consider it a victory in life for supporting a great cause and having a heck of a lot of fun being a part of the process.

Deep Creek Lake and Wisp Resorts 55th Birthday Party

Wisp Resort has reached another epic milestone this weekend as they celebrated their 55th Birthday as the go-to ski resort on the East Coast. What better way to celebrate than bringing in Food Network’s most popular cake artists, Charm City Cakes. Duff Goldman led the charge straight off the snowboard slope to christen and cut the cake with his crew. It was standing room only on Sunday in the Wisp Lodge to get a glimpse of the cake re-creation of the Wisp Mountain and the Ski & Golf Resort. The snow has been steadily pounding us here at Deep Creek Lake and skiing conditions are improving with every new inch we receive. Wisp has had their snowmaking efforts rolling around the clock for the last couple weeks to ensure that we had a full parking lot of skiers to celebrate their wonderful milestone Birthday party.

Wisp Resort’s Flying Squirrel Canopy Tour-Deep Creek Lake. The newest adventure activity to hit Deep Creek Lake, Maryland…a Canopy Tour attraction!  I had the great opportunity to experience Wisp Resort’s Flying Squirrel Canopy Tour for myself a few weeks ago.  It was a blast!  There are 5 zips plus a training zip at the beginning of the course.  It’s important to pay attention in the practice area and listen to all of the guides instructions, it will make your tour go smoother and safer.

Remember to bring your handheld recording device or camera to bring the experience home with you.  It takes approximately 1 1/2 hours to get through the course and they can take up to 8 people and a Guide at a time.  The cost is $39/pp.  Happy zipping

Karen Myers  inducted in  the Maryland Business Hall of Fame

Last night I was fortunate enough to attend the Maryland Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame Award Ceremonies.  Deep Creek Lake native and a 10th generation Frazee, Karen Frazee Myers, was inducted into Maryland’s Business Hall of Fame.  Karen was recognized by her peers for her decades of promotion of the one-time sleepy Deep Creek Lake/Garrett County area, which has become a go-to destination for Mid-Atlantic residents.

Karen’s “nose to grindstone” work ethic has bloomed several successful businesses throughout her lengthy career.  Her flourishing businesses, Mountaineer Log & Siding www.mountaineerlog.com, Wisp Ski & Golf Resort www.wispresort.com, Deep Creek Marina www.deepcreekmarina.com, and real estate business are products of her relentless determination.

Even during the big moment in her life, Karen still recognizes her partners, her family, her friends and her employee’s who have supported her through sometimes difficult years.  Her resiliency through the hard times (and the good times) along with her insight into what would make her endeavors successful has paid off long term.

Karen’s career really started 35 years ago in the real estate business when the lake was “undiscovered” as a resort and second home destination.  It took many years for Karen to put Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake on a mainstream map.

Her daughter, Betsy Spiker, took over the reigns from her mother to become Deep Creek Lake’s trusted real estate guru

Karen Myers inducted in the Maryland Business Hall of Fame

She has mentored her children throughout their lives to be positive community role models and successful business leaders.  Her son, Adrian Spiker, has taken a dream of creating the best marina in Deep Creek Lake and made it a reality.  She has influenced and guided him into making the most thriving marina on the lake.

“Not too bad for a country girl” says Karen Myers at the awards podium in Baltimore, Maryland.  Not too bad at all for a woman who grew up in a family from White Rock who exceeded, by anybody’s standards, personal success…business success…family success…community success…spiritual success…  I have been fortunate to be in Karen’s circle for the past 3 years and understand and respect why the State of Maryland has chose to recognize this special woman with such a prestigious honor.

 Congratulations, Karen!!

Lodestone- Lodestone Golf Course

 Betsy Holcomb

Lodestone

A Lodestone by definition is a naturally magnetized piece of the mineral magnetite. It was considered a very powerful amulet in the eyes of the ancient Greeks as far back as the 6th century. Deep Creek Lake’s newest jewel, The Lodestone Golf Course, is destined to possess that same commanding attraction upon its opening in the spring of 2010. This is a golf course that is beautifully laid out throughout Wisp Mountain capturing amazing views, rolling mountain topography, huge rock outcroppings, and two distinct personalities between the front nine and the back nine. There are many breathtaking views from the golf course and from some truly amazing homesites throughout the mountain. One of my favorite views is off the 13th fairway looking down on the lake and the Dam. It required blasting about 6000 cubic yards of pure rock to open up a view slot to this downhill par 5 to be able to see this gorgeous lake view. I’m very excited to have such an upscale golf facility to add to Deep Creek Lake’s list of fun things to enjoy. Bring your sticks on your next visit and join this Hale Irwin classic.
