Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Weather-Snowmobiling-Ice Fishing-Art & Wine Festival

Betsy Holcomb

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake where weather, snowmobiling, ice fishing and the Art & Wine Festival are the topic of the week. The summer season is slowly winding down for folks here at the lake as school calls back our children and autumn emerges slowly in the distant horizon. Don’t throw in the towel for the year just yet! Take full advantage on the lake over the next month or so as the crowds will slim down and the trees will explode with fall colors. Enjoy this wonderful fall spectacle from your deck, a boat or from the trails of our many state parks here in Garrett County. Although summer has historically comfortable temperatures, we will see things improve even more over the next few months. The tables turn ever so slowly from the low 70’s in September to the low 50’s in November. Check out Garrett County Weather Data.

I’d like to jump ahead to remind you of a few things you may want to put on your list of things to do when the winter kicks in and the snow starts falling. I have shared my passions for winter sports with most of you and you know that snowmobiling (or “sledding” as know by most locals) is my go-to sport outside of snowboarding. Take some time and research this sport and start making plans to purchase you and your family a pair of sleds and you will truly experience an exciting way to travel the lake. I would contact the Garrett County Snowdrifters if you are new to this sport. With excitement comes danger; get familiar with the lake conditions, ice depth and the trails off the lake.

Nothing goes hand in hand with sledding as well as ice fishing. As you sled across the lake you will see your share of make-shift shanties covering a slew of holes on the ice. It’s from these small holes that you can experience some of the most productive fishing that the lake has to offer. You will see big hauls of yellow perch, small mouth bass, highly prized walleye as well as a few more delicious varieties of DCL delicacies.  A great place to start researching is Fish Deep Creek.
