Deep Creek Lake’s Top Spring Activities

We are often asked what are Deep Creek Lake’s best spring activities. In a four-season resort like Deep Creek there is always plenty to do as you transition into each season. As we start getting closer to the end of the 2016 winter season it’s a great time to start planning next season’s family adventures. Springtime always has a special place in my heart personally because of the abundance of “new life” after a long winter of hibernation. You will not be disappointed with the diverse amount of activities we have here at Deep Creek to experience. Here are a few to get you started…

Deep Creek Lakes Top Spring Activities
Early morning fishing trip Deep Creek Lake.

  • Fishing- Like fishing? Get up before the crack of dawn and get out on the lake with a pale full of golden shiners in some secluded little cove near the dam and get ready to wear out your wrist reeling in 14+ species of fish. All your favorites are here such as largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, black crappie, yellow perch, bluegill and many other species. Start your day enjoying the peaceful calm that Deep Creek offers every morning and fill up your cooler with lunch for the family.

With seven State parks, you will have no problem getting your fill of the green life. Mild temperatures, budding trees and blooming wildflowers make spring a great time to hike in the area. There is plenty of information online to get you started, so grab your family and get stepping!

  • The Spring Thaw at Swallow Falls- You can witness a really amazing spectacle here at Deep Creek Lake in the Spring time. The Spring thaw at Deep Creek lake is basically all the snow accumulation during the winter melting which swells the rivers and waterfalls. Take some time to research and check out this amazing event.

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Summer Activities

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Summer Activities. It gets easier to be revved up for summer when you start seeing the boats filtering on the lake. Yesterday there was a mix of recreational tubers, fisherman, and marinas tuning up boats for their clients. Weather has warmed up to summer temps this week and you can tell folks are starting to gather into the lake. Last night I did my evening paddleboard between 7:30pm-9:00pm and saw some late evening fisherman and a few boats screaming by trying to ensure that their boats are running smoothly. I cruised past a family of at least a dozen who were throwing football and roasting smores around a fire pit near the water’s edge. I love summer!

In case you missed the USA Canoe/Kayak Whitewater Slalom Team Trails this weekend, here is a photo gallery on our Deep Creek Lake, Maryland Facebook page of some of the action. Remember this will determine who will be competing in next year’s ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships of 2014 between September 16-21, 2014. We had three Olympic medalists here competing this weekend. Look ahead in your calendar if you plan on visiting because this is no small event. Word is that lots of people will have to stay out of town because all rentals will be booked. This event will be the biggest event ever hosted here at the lake. The eyes of the world and Canoe/Kayak community will be focused on Deep Creek Lake for a week. Plan far in advance so you don’t miss it!

Intense competition

If you have not visited ASCI or tried to go whitewater rafting I highly recommend it! There are only a few re-circulating whitewater courses in the world and we are lucky to have the best here in our back yard.

This weekend we have the Tom Wallisch Rail Jam at Wisp Resort on Saturday, May 25th. Registration is between 6pm-7pm with the competition starting soon thereafter. They say there is plenty of snow to hold this event and I hope you have a chance to go check out some of the skiers and snowboarders competing. The Tom Batcherlor Band will provide the music.

Not sure what direction to go this weekend? A few suggestions…

Go zip lining, ride the mountain coaster, or go for a dune buggy ride at Wisp Resort. Go hiking or rock climbing at Fork Run Recreational Area. Go get some hot wings and a crabcake from The Black Bear.  Go visit the magnificent waterfalls at Swallow Falls State Park.  Go rent a boat, canoe, kayak or paddleboard from Deep Creek Marina.  Go try out Deep Creek Lake’s newest restaurant Aces Run.  Go enjoy an eco tour with the family.  Go fishing on DCL or the Yough River.  Go play golf at the well received Lodestone Golf ClubBuy a home here at the lake!!!  Call Betsy Holcomb 301-616-5022 http://deepcreeklakeproperty.com/meet-betsy/

Greetings from Deep Creek!

Greetings from Deep Creek Lake-Spring Break, Golf Rates. I hope you had a fantastic spring break, if you were lucky enough to have one this year. Betsy and I spent some quality family time showing off little Griffin to my family and friends in Virginia Beach and in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The biggest reward a second home can offer are memories with your family and friends that you will retain for the rest of your life.  This investment is much more than a financial venture.  Many of our past clients share with us wonderful stories about DCL such as adventures with their children or grandchildren when they first learned to snow or water ski.  We understand this feeling first hand as we watch our 4-month old son develop week-by-week and realize how lucky in life we are to be able to share the mountain and beach life with him.

Speaking of children…The Community Aquatic and Recreation Center (CARC) here at the lake has put together some really interesting summer camps for the children. If you are not familiar with the fairly new CARCCenter at GarrettCollege, check out their website and all the wonderful things they have to offer (see hyperlink above).

Deep Creek Lake Lodestone Golf Caddy

Last year around this time I had a great opportunity to caddie for Hale Irwin when he christened the front nine at Lodestone Golf Club.  I felt that I nailed it, but after the round Hale half jokingly told me I was the worst caddie he ever had in his career….Ouch!

Deep Creek Lake-Hale Irwin-Lodestone Golf Caddy
Hale and Steve Irwin

Although I have spent 24 years building golf courses, I never really had time to grasp exactly what a caddie does other than carry the bag. It was news to me that each club actually had a specific place in the bag. Go figure. My take on it was the same as when I play and I just stuff the club wherever it fits.  It was news to me that I was supposed to bring a wet and dry towel to keep the clubs and golf ball clean. I had to grasp the critical caddy duties that keep the golfer focused on his game. Thankfully for me, this was a practice round and I wasn’t responsible for taking any food off the Irwin family’s table!

This year I made sure I was on my “A” game so that if I was called to duty in the caddying department I wouldn’t be smacked around for my lack of skills! I got back in the gym, got into strong physical shape and studied PGA game films of caddies who worked for the best golfers in the world. Now I felt I was ready to assume the role as super caddy!

This year it was my responsibility to caddy for Steve Irwin, who is Hale’s son. I had a wet towel ready to wipe down clubs and golf balls, and returned clubs to their proper place with scientific precision. Steve actually used a few suggestions about putting lines and shot trajectories into greens. I think Hale even had a chuckle or two about my born-again effort to be a decent golf caddy.

I have hung up my golf course construction boots for good and have happily put on the real estate cap here in Deep Creek Lake, but there will always be this feeling deep down in my heart wondering if my calling all along was to be the best caddie ever on the PGA tour!

Hale Irwin at Deep Creek Lake. Wisp Resort Development, Inc. has spent a decade nurturing a dream of bringing a championship-caliber golf club to Deep Creek Lake. They upgraded the original design team and brought in Hale Irwin years ago to bring the creative eyes and experience of a 3-time U.S. Open champion. Hale Irwin will be here to play a preview round on the back nine of the new Lodestone Golf Course on July 10, 2010 with Lodestone Club members. Lodestone Golf Club Trial Use Privilege. The elevated excitement about the grand opening of Lodestone Golf Course is going to a higher level with the introduction of the new Trial Use Privilege Program.  This already legendary golf course, on top of Wisp Mountain, has people blown away by the natural aesthetic beauty of this thoroughbred golf paradise. The grassing scheme alone takes this rolling mountain course to the pinnacle…. Lodestone used the most modern bent grass hybrids on the tees, fairways, and greens, while framing it all in with fescue/bluegrass outer roughs. The combination of the upscale grass and the amazing design work that Hale Irwin and Design Workshop executed puts this track in a league of its own by a long shot.

Lodestone- Lodestone Golf Course

Lodestone

A Lodestone by definition is a naturally magnetized piece of the mineral magnetite. It was considered a very powerful amulet in the eyes of the ancient Greeks as far back as the 6th century. Deep Creek Lake’s newest jewel, The Lodestone Golf Course, is destined to possess that same commanding attraction upon its opening in the spring of 2010. This is a golf course that is beautifully laid out throughout Wisp Mountain capturing amazing views, rolling mountain topography, huge rock outcroppings, and two distinct personalities between the front nine and the back nine. There are many breathtaking views from the golf course and from some truly amazing homesites throughout the mountain. One of my favorite views is off the 13th fairway looking down on the lake and the Dam. It required blasting about 6000 cubic yards of pure rock to open up a view slot to this downhill par 5 to be able to see this gorgeous lake view. I’m very excited to have such an upscale golf facility to add to Deep Creek Lake’s list of fun things to enjoy. Bring your sticks on your next visit and join this Hale Irwin classic.
